What’s the full name of your label? Which city is the home of your label? Do you run any sub-labels?
I run a label called Important. We are located in Graveland, Massachusetts in the United States and I do not
run any sub labels.
Why did you choose that name? Which meaning do names of labels have for their work?
The name was chosen because it is a word people use often to describe music. Obviously, the value of any particular piece of music’s importance is entirely subjective.
When did you start the label? What where initial motivations, what the initial idea?
I started the label in 2001 and the initial motivation was to create a record label with a vast array of artists that I am interested in. Since I don’t listen to any one genre of music exclusively I wanted to create a label that ecompassed a broad range of sounds.
How many people do work for the label?
Two full time employees (including myself) and a few part timers.
What criteria decide about whether you release a record or not?
It’s so complex I don’t even know where to start. Essentially I have to find the record to be interesting and have some faith that I will, at least, break even financially.
Vinyl, CD or MP3? And why?
All of them though my primary focus is on manufacturing CDs and LPs.
Which record from your back-catalog represents the label best, aesthetically, ethically and musically?
The label has been curated in such a way that no one record could represent the label. The label is collectively represented as the sum of its parts.
