What’s the full name of your label? Which city is the home of your label? Do you run any sub-labels?
Sargent House. Echo Park, Los Angeles CA, USA. Rodriguez Lopez Productions is a sub-label of ours.
Why did you choose that name? Which meaning do names of labels have for their work?
Sargent House is the name of the historical 4 story 1920′s house from which the Label is run. Rodriguez Lopez Productions is named for it’s Founder Omar Rodriguez Lopez. I don’t know what influence names of labels have on their work. We just named our label based on the fact that it is like a big house and we act like a family and because it all really happens quite literally in Sargent House.
When did you start the label? What where initial motivations, what the initial idea?
We started in 2006. The initial and current motivation for starting the label is because we are artists managers and we got tired of our bands never benefitting from the sales of their music. We also like to do things more creatively and in conjunction with the ideas of the band. It was a way to have complete creative control for the artists we manage to be able to put out records the way we all wanted.
How many people do work for the label?
Seven people work at the label, three publicists work off site but full time on our Label and then the whole sales team at our distributor RedEye.
What criteria decide about whether you release a record or not?
We have to like the music and believe in the artist – that is our only criteria.
Vinyl, CD or MP3? And why?
All of them. Because different strokes for different folks they all serve the purpose of getting music out there.
Which record from your back-catalog represents the label best, aesthetically, ethically and musically?
RX BANDITS “….And the Battle Begun” (MDB909, 2006) – because it’s the record that started it all for Sargent House.
